PoE for access control: what to check

Check device support, available power and the complete door installation before choosing a PoE configuration.

Power and data on the connection

Power over Ethernet can supply a compatible network device through the Ethernet cabling. Both ends must support a compatible power arrangement: the switch or injector supplies power and the device receives it. A network port alone does not mean that a terminal accepts PoE.

Start with the ordering code and datasheet for the actual terminal. Some products offer PoE only as an option. Confirm the required standard, power class and permitted supply method rather than relying on a product family name.

Account for every load

Review the device’s maximum requirement and the switch’s per-port limit and total power budget. Include the other devices sharing that switch and the intended operating conditions. The power stated at the source is not necessarily the power available to the device.

Treat a door lock, relay and accessories as separate items in the design. A relay contact controls a circuit; it does not automatically provide the power required by the lock. Review the complete wiring drawing with the installer.

Survey the cable route

Record the cable type, length, patching and installation environment. Use the cabling and connector requirements specified for the selected power equipment and device. Have the installed link checked before attributing intermittent device resets to software.

Avoid connecting an unverified passive injector merely because the connector fits. Confirm the supply arrangement and any splitter or adapter as part of the selected configuration.

Plan outages and maintenance

A central switch can simplify power management, but it also creates a shared dependency. Decide what should remain operational during a supply outage, what backup power is required and what happens when the switch restarts.

Document which network ports serve which entrances. Limit power cycling to authorised maintenance and verify that the terminal, application and event delivery recover correctly. The building’s emergency exit behaviour must be addressed separately in the door design.

  • Confirm the exact PoE option before ordering.
  • Check per-port and whole-switch power capacity.
  • Test startup and operation with the intended peripherals.
  • Retain the final network and power drawing.
