Introduction
With hundreds of smart lock models on the market, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks the decision into five manageable steps, with specific criteria relevant to real-world use cases like rental properties, family homes, and commercial buildings.
Step 1: Determine Your Door Compatibility
Door Thickness
Before anything else, measure your door thickness. FEOCEY X GEN1 is compatible with doors ranging from 35mm to 70mm thick. Measure at the lock bore hole – not at the edge of the door.
Single vs. Double-Cylinder
Most residential doors use a single-cylinder deadbolt (key on outside, thumb turn on inside). FEOCEY X GEN1 is designed for single-cylinder installations. If you have a double-cylinder lock (key required on both sides), you will need to replace it with a single-cylinder version before installing a smart lock.
Backset Measurement
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the keyhole. Standard residential backsets are either 60mm (2-3/8″) or 70mm (2-3/4″). FEOCEY fits both standard backsets.
Step 2: Choose Your Access Methods
App + Code Access (FEOCEY Standard)
FEOCEY X GEN1 provides App-based unlock and customizable passcodes. You do not need fingerprint or NFC – the App and keypad are the primary access methods. This is the simplest and most reliable approach.
Physical Key Backup
All FEOCEY locks include a physical key backup. The keyhole is on the exterior keypad unit. In an emergency, the physical key will always work.
Remote Access Requirements
If you need to unlock the door from anywhere in the world, you need the Wi-Fi bridge feature (built into FEOCEY X GEN1). If you only need to unlock when you are within Bluetooth range (approximately 10 meters), no bridge is needed.
Step 3: Evaluate Your Connectivity Infrastructure
Wi-Fi Signal Strength
Smart locks require stable Wi-Fi. Before purchasing, test your Wi-Fi signal strength at the door using a smartphone. If the signal is weak (less than 2 bars), consider:
- Moving your router closer to the door
- Installing a Wi-Fi range extender near the entrance
- Using a mesh Wi-Fi system with a node near the door
Smart Home Integration
FEOCEY integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT. If you use a different smart home platform, verify compatibility before purchasing. FEOCEY’s open API also supports custom integrations.
Step 4: Assess Your Security Requirements
Lock Body Security Rating
FEOCEY X GEN1 uses a Grade 2 certified deadbolt mechanism. For high-security applications (commercial properties, sensitive areas), Grade 1 deadbolts are available as an optional upgrade.
Audit Trail Requirements
If you need detailed access logs (for commercial properties or Airbnb management), the FEOCEY Home App provides 90-day access history with timestamps, user identification, and unlock method for each event.
Step 5: Plan for Long-Term Maintenance
Battery Replacement Schedule
Plan to replace batteries twice per year. Many users find spring and fall to be convenient reminders – align battery replacement with daylight saving time changes.
Firmware Update Strategy
Enable automatic firmware updates in the FEOCEY Home App. Never skip firmware updates, as they often include critical security patches. Updates typically take under 2 minutes and occur at night when the lock is not in active use.
